Ready To Get Rolling Again

I haven't posted very much this summer because let's face it, having kids is a lot of work! We do a lot of fun things, and I have found it hard to get my camera out as often as I would like! But summer is winding down and I am ready to start snapping away again! In the next few weeks I have a few people that want pictures done, so hopefully I get a few more posts up here! In the meantime here are a few of my favorites from this summer.

Branching Out a Little

It's funny how things work, before I got my camera I was really into taking pictures of kids/people, and wanted nothing more than to take great pictures of my girls for keepsake. But I have ALWAYS been drawn to scenic images. I love the peace I feel when I see a great shot of a calm lake or a mountain road in the fall. So the last few weeks since we have been camping a bit and kind of all over the place, I decided to give it a try. I LOVE IT! It is so amazing to take a step back from all the play and to simply BE there. You notice the beauty that is right in front of you. There is no one to pose or make smile, you just look around you and make ART. Here are a few from this weekend, they were mostly taken up at my inlaws cabin.

These last two fire pictures aren't anything spectacular
but I really liked them for some reason, the top was
taken with a 15 second exposure. Which means my
shutter was open for 15 seconds while it took the picture.
The bottom was a 3 second exposure.

Last night I had the privilege of taking pictures of my cousins two little boys. I hope that when I have boys they are half as cute as these two little studs! They were so fun and sweet, and so photogenic! Oh, and I got a new lens, YEAH! I think I learned more last night than I have in the last 4 months. It was my first time using a fixed lens, so it was a little tricky figuring out the depth of field and how shallow it can get, but it was sooooo fun! I love the way they turned out!

I am so used to my zoom lens that I was meaning
to have both the boys in focus, but I LOVE that
they are not!)

This week I took on the huge task of taking grandkid pictures for my mom. 7 kids under the age of 7 is a bigger job than it seems! I got a few that I liked, and some that REALLY made me laugh!

This one seems to be my favorite because no one is crying ;)

I love these last three, they are unedited, but they were not
happy to get their pictures taken, they make me laugh.

Saturday I got to go do these Sr. pictures, they were so fun! It was such a gorgeous evening, and this was a first for me in working with animals AND people in the same shot! What a blast! I had so many out of this set that I LOVED, so I put quite a few up! I hope you like them! Thanks Cassie!

A Proud Moment!

Alright, so this morning was Easter Morning, and my girls got their new dresses. I wanted to get some pictures of them before they got messy, so before church I took them out on the front lawn, and I got possibly my two favorite pictures of either of them!!!!!!! I was so excited! And these are the raw unphotoshopped pictures, I didn't want to touch them! If anyone reads this, please leave your thoughts! I would love to hear what you have to say!

These next two were yesterday. The first is up on top of a chunk of rocks called "Big Rock" by my parents house. Someone put a flag up there, and I just loved this picture of Syd looking at it.

The above picture is self explanatory. But I also just thought
it was cute.

Ok, now the bubble pictures were so fun. My cousin
Brock is in the above picture, he's a cutie.

This one I really want to do something with, like a photo
contest or something. At first glance it looks just like
a normal picture, but when it is big, you can see
the reflection of the fence in the bubbles and even my
camera if you look close at the left one!

Slacker Slacker

I have been completely slacking!!!! It has been such yucky weather, and I have decided that for the most part taking pictures inside is pretty lame (seeing as how I don't have a studio). And I have also decided that I am really into taking real life action pictures. Pictures that tell a story are so fascinating to me. So it is just going to take practice. My sister is doing softball right now, I will go to some games this week and see what I can get.
In the meantime... We went hiking today, and I was in heaven, I got a few that I thought were fun.

My sis in law is in the Jr. Miss Pageant, and needed me to take a few pictures of her so she could have them on display. She is a total crack up! It was fun to take pictures of her in this dress, isn't it AMAZING! We took a ton of pictures, here are just a few of my favorites!

My First Family

Ok, so my friend let me take their family pictures just for practice. They were such good sports! I learned a lot, my number one lesson with this was that I have sooooo much to learn about photo shop. I usually just use some downloaded actions. Those are not a one size fits all. Most of them made her hair too dark and face too light. I ended up going back and liking the originals much better than the ones I had messed with. I also learned how to play with the coloring by hand, that is a great thing to be able to do, but I don't enjoy that very much because it takes too long. So I realized I need to take a photoshop class, I don't want to spend all my time on the computer, I would rather be taking the pictures! Which brings me to my next lesson, if you take the picture right the first time, you don't have to spend as much time on the computer! Practice practice pratice!

For some reason I find it so much fun to take the "in action" pictures. I love trying to capture a moving target! For me it tells a story, usually imperfect, but accurate.

My New Little Nephew

This was my first time taking pictures of a little baby, it's fun but a little harder because we did it inside so it was a little tricky with the lighting. Plus we had a couple crazy toddlers ripping around the place. He is such a sweet baby!

Note to self: When doing pictures like this, turn mommies

We went snowmobiling this weekend, and I took my camera so I could dink around a little. I had the most fun trying to get a decent sunburst. Since I have read about it a little in my book, I was just going off what I remembered from that. Basically I just made my aperture small, like f/22 and tried to hide half the sun behind the subject. I was pretty excited about a few of them! I have definitely seen way better, but it was my first attempt.

These two of my mom were the first ones.
The others of my sis in her goggles were
next. The sun peaked out and I realized
that it helps to have the contrast of the blue
sky to dramatize it a little.

This was kind of a random picture, I am not sure
why I like it so much, but I do!

This was my favorite action shot of Brian, next time I will
remember to meter off the blue sky, hopefully that makes
it a little bluer.

The Red Box

I have been on the hunt for a cool chair, with no luck I found this crate and decided that I could have some fun with it! I am still in the process of painting it, but you get the picture! Look for it in the future because I plan on using it a lot!

Trying Out A Studio

My friend that lives right behind us has a home studio in her basement. I decided to do Morgan's 6 month pictures there since she is at a harder age to get outside one's done. I really liked how they turned out, I learned a lot. One thing I learned is that when you are dealing with really good flash, you can have a faster shutter speed, lower aperture, and even though your camera doesn't meter it as "correct" it still looks great! Good to know.

I didn't play with photoshop on this one, but
I loved that she was fighting with her wings!

So my friend found these horse swings kind of by Bonneville High, and she fell in love with them. We decided to go and see what kind of still life images we could get. It was a lot of fun, and something different for me.

I Gave It a Try . . . Kind Of

Okay, the story is that I set my goal to learn a little about action shots this week. I did learn a lot about action shots this week, just not how I anticipated. I went to my neighbors gymnastics meet on Monday. It was pretty dark in there, so lesson #1 is that you need pretty good lighting to get a very fast shutter speed. Without a fast shutter speed you can't freeze things in action. I was going to go down to St. George for my sister's softball tournament, but Morgan got Croup. We stayed home and missed out. Lesson #2 kid's come first ;) . So Saturday we ended up at the Weber State basketball game. I was pretty excited to see that it was bright enough to get a decent shutter speed, not great but like 1/160. So my final lesson #3 was that I need to practice on a slower sport! Basketball is pretty hard because everything is so fast and I couldn't keep up. When the Dancers came out I got a few better ones.

Making a little progress

I have a friend who recommended a book called "Understanding Exposure". I say it is an absolute must read for anyone who has an SLR and wants to learn how to TRULY understand its potential.

So this is my beginning, I know these aren't great pictures, but I am putting them up so that I can see the difference between aperture and shutter speeds. Also I want to put up a couple of my favorite pictures I've taken with my camera so far.

Everything started out in Auto Mode. I had some
okay ones, but not much depth.

This birds nest was one of the okay ones, mostly
because its a cool nest, not because I did that great.

AAAAAAh! Moons are not so cool!!!!!!! Why doesn't
it look the way it did in the lense!

These feet were another Auto. It took me about 10
shots to get this one.

f/4.5 1/640 with a wider aperture and a faster shutter speed
the background is fuzzy and the plant is in focus.

Yeah! A little Manual success! I am reading that
book and learning about depth of field, aperture,
and shutter speed.

f/32 1/10a smaller aperture and slower shutter speed you can
see more detail in the background.
